One of the largest beef recalls in U.S. history was announced October 4th, 2018. The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), a division of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has confirmed dozens of salmonella infections across 16 states. Over 6.9 million pounds of ground beef and non-intact beef products were linked to the outbreaks and identified for recall.
“FSIS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state public health and agriculture partners have now determined that raw ground beef was the probable source of the reported illnesses,” according to the recall notice.
The FDA is advising all consumers to either return or destroy all recalled products. They also encourage everyone to inventory both the refrigerator and freezer for these recalled products. The FDA is most concerned that restaurants, institutions and consumers may overlook affected products in freezers. Freezing does not kill Salmonella.

According to the FSIS, JBS Tolleson Inc. of Tolleson, AZ, shipped the beef nationwide. JBS Tolleson is a unit of JBS USA Holdings Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of JBS S.A. (the world's largest beef producer, based in Brazil). The
recalled beef was marketed and sold under multiple brands, which include:
- Showcase (sold by Walmart)
- Kroger
- Cedar River Farms
- Comnor Perfect Choice
- Gourmet Burger
- Grass Run Farms
- JBS Generic

The JBS products were packaged from July 26 through September 7th. Anyone who has eaten any of the recalled beef and developed symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek medical attention and tell their doctors about the possible exposure to the pathogen. The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. Symptoms usually lasts 4 to 7 days in otherwise healthy adults. In some cases, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized.
