Is it Possible that the Sugar in Our Fruit is Making Us Fat?

It's often said from medical community that we all need to eat more fruits and vegetables. That may be true, but there's a new twist in regards to consuming too many fruits... As the story goes, the Melbourne Zoo has removed all fruit from the diet of their resident primates and pandas. It seems that the genetically cultivated fruits currently on the market contains more sugar than ever, so much so it made the zoo animals overweight and rotted their teeth. This anecdotal account of a healthy-diet-gone-wrong may make you wonder what our fruit is doing to us humans. Does eating too much fruit really have the ability to rot our teeth? Are fruits less nutritious than they had been? In the following podcast NPR interviews food author Frederick Kaufman about how humans have bred fruit to be more sugary.
